Thanks to all for this information. I had exactly the same question and was happy to find the answer so quickly here. Best wishes on successfully passing the certification.

El Paso ISD offers a range of programs for gifted, including a dual language immersion program; they do also much wiork with their Title I schols. Contact Mary Ann Calrk at xxxxx@xxxxx.com.
While I am "prejudiced" since I work at TAGT and believe in this typ[e of advocacy, I have had practical experience, having helped establish parent support groups several times. It is most important to position the group as a positve force and as a "friend" to the school. When groups form solely in repsonse to problems, it is harder to maintain and grow the group when the school or district perceives you as an "adversary." The most successful groups have becomoe allies with the district and can provide trianing orinfomration that schools may neo be able to do, such as disseminating infomration about scholarships, summer programs, training for parents, etc.
If you haven't seen the recently released study from CEEP titled "Mind the (Other) Gap" you should watch this quick overview of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nJK3z-G-v-I
It is a nice piece of data from general ed that focuses attention at the top end and the gap that exists between subpops. Might provide some teeth for initiatives in your area/district.
So...this may be completely irrelevant as you posted a year ago, but just in case you're still looking...We do a MindBender Academy in Frisco for middle school. It's open to all of the kids, but many of our GT kids attend and love it. The link to program information is http://www.friscoisd.org/community/FEF/documents/BrochureandInfoforWeb.pdf.
Now that the TX GIfted Cafe is up and running, it is time to update the first post. The State Board of Education did approve the revised State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students. TAGT was pleased to have the "rollout" of the newly printed plan at our Annual Conference. You can find the new State Plan in both English and Spanish on the TEA website at www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=6420.
Well, I figured that since I'm a new coordinator... maybe I ought to take the test. :) I've run through all the practice questions and aced them... but the study materials were awfully vague on the historical developments.
My local ESC (7) has a prep class and materials too. I can't find Region 4's prep book online to purchase.
I appreciate your help - I'll brush up on my theorists and models!
The historical figures and theory is a minor part of the test. You will want to be familiar with Renzulli, Clark, Gardner, Gagne, Tannenbaum, and Sternberg. Each has a model of giftedness. You need to know Hollingworth and Terman. You might also check on Rimm's underachievement model and Gallagher & Gallagher's work.
Vygotsky and Bruner are the most notable theorists.
The bulk of the test is about knowing who GT kids and that their educational services should be about their ACADEMIC growth. Remember the test is about utopia where the resources are unlimited and you can concentrate on the needs of a single student.
Region IV ESC (Houston) offers a prep class. They also sell a study guide. The Houston Area Cooperative on the Gifted and Talented offers a prep class to teachers in member districts.
Good luck! Glad you're interested in becoming certified!
That is a good idea. It would essentually use the same webforms module I am currently using on the main website for surveys and evaluations. One potential issue is that responses would not be anonymous if the users were logged in here, which may raise privacy concerns or influence the results. What are your thoughts?
I think we have to really promote it at Leadership and then at the annual conference.
I don't have a good plan for Pre-AP at middle school. I like CFB's Pre-AP Potential they developed. We don't do district-wide standardized testing (starting this year with 2nd grade) so we have less data to use then CFB, but I'm thinking of trying out what they use.
Well the board was essentially in testing mode until yesterday. I think people will start checking in now that it's public and we're promoting it. The key to getting people to use this is getting people to use this: once people start, it'll build steam. I'll definitely be there Monday.
I've done a comparison of the 2000 State Plan version and the Sept 2009 draft (10/08/09) that Kelly sent me. I'd be happy to share it by email after it's rolled out at the conference.

Thanks for sharing, Suz, we can always count on you to get to the heart of the matter!!!!R
I have emailed the SENG facilitator trainer to see what is involved. I am in San Antonio. Where are you?

Does anyone know of a GT program that caters to ELL/ESL kids?

Great information! Thanks!
You might have to call. I think it's $40.
The suggestion to use a textbook on gifted ed is good. Many will cover the main theorists.
If you can get your hands on a copy of the first chapter or two of this textbook http://www.amazon.com/Education-Gifted-Talented-Gary-Davis/dp/555-5555/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=555-5555&sr=1-2, then that should give you all of the background information that you need for the test.
Or, if you can, just purchase the book. It's a wonderful resource.

Great idea on the feedback and evals taking place through the TXGifted Cafe! That would get people to the site and see it first-hand!
Rigor is an issue in all of part of what we do! ugh!
Maybe feedback and evals could go here after the conference? Then encourage tose who attend to start using it. ?
We are struggling with rigor just within PAP - let alone G/T in PAP. We are upping the ante on requiring training. We'll see.
Let's visit...:)

Wow - that generated a lot of discussion. :) How do we get this tool more actively USED?? :) See you Monday??
